Utah Fly Fishing

Other things to do in Park City Utah besides skiing – Fly Fishing

(Ryan’s 2nd catch)

There are other things to do in Park City besides skiing and our group out yesterday found some luck on the river fly fishing.  Park City this year doesn’t have much snow yet, so people are looking for alternatives to skiing and so we are seeing a lot of people wanting to come out and fly fish the provo river with us.  There were a lot of people on the water yesterday since the weather is still warm.  All four people in the group caught fish, so if you are looking for things to do in park city this winter besides skiing…come out with us and try fly fishing.

Provo River Fly Fishing Friends, Fish & Stories

Provo River fly fishing takes skill and sometimes it takes luck and sometimes it’s a mix between the two.

During my six years of guiding fly fishing, I have had the opportunity to fly fish with some pretty lucky fishers.  I’ve seen it all, people who catch HUGE fish their FIRST cast, and people who catch TWO fish on the SAME line.  I’ve seen people have 50+ fish days and I’ve seen the beginning fly fisherwoman who’s never caught a fish out-fish their tough manly man who claims to be an expert fly-fisherman (and there goes their pride).

And out of all the stories of success, luck, and skill, there is one of my clients who has done some serious Provo River fly fishing and deserves to be wrote about, his name is Greg.  He is just a normal guy, except for his extreme luck, and even though he’s caught the biggest trout I’ve ever seen, to him it’s about the experience.  I can see it as he approaches the Provo, it’s like he’s finally home.  He’s all about the experience and just having a good time.  He started fishing with me March of 2010 and came back during the summer of 2010 and then to fish the spawn last November.  Now he just came out again to cure his fishing desires this past week.

It was good catching up with Greg again, but what surprises me most is the fishing stories I’m about to tell about this man.  Here goes:

1st time he came out with me in March he landed an 18 inch brown on the first or second cast and it didn’t even put up a fight, he just pulled it right in…he even jokingly thought I planted it there.

2nd time he came out with me he was the first person I’ve ever seen catch a Cuttbow out of the Provo River.

3rd time he came out with me he caught the biggest trout I’ve ever seen (picture below; approx 24-26 inches) and had a 50+ fish day.

4th time he came out (Just last week) caught plenty of fish and landed a nice 16-17 inch brown on a hopper (picture below), that was a first for me as well, along with plenty of other huge fish.

The main point I’m trying to make is that for whatever reason, and although Greg is skilled, he has gotten extremley lucky.  He’s caught some huge fish and some unique fish.  He’s fun to fish with, has become a great friend and has gave me a lot of stories to share with others.  I hope his luck and success rubs off on all my Utah Fly Fishing clients, good luck to all and Fish On!

What is the Green Drake Hatch Near Park City Utah?

This is a great time to get out and fly fish in Utah.  We’ve been seeing some really good fishing for the last two weeks.  The green drake hatch is on! Don’t know what this means? It means getting into some pretty nice fish and fast. During the green drake hatch you can use the dry fly technique that lets you catch fish off the top of the river, just like you’ve seen in the movie: “A River Runs Through It!”  If you have ever wanted to try dry fly fishing, and your near Park City Utah, nows the time.  My clients have been loving it.  See some pictures in our gallery.

Dry fly fishing allows you to see some serious fish action. As you cast your line up the river and watch the fly float down… BAM, instantly you see a fish rise and take your fly! It’s the most exhilarating thing ever. You have to experience it to believe it. For all you experienced fly fishermen, you know exactly what I am talking about.

The sad thing is the green drake hatch is almost over. It’ll only last for another week or so, but no worries. There are more hatches in August, such as the PMD Hatch (Pale Morning Dun).

Let’s get you and your friends/family out on the river.  Book your trip today so we can ensure you a reservation for the greatest fly fishing this year.

What To Do In Park City Besides Skiing – Fly Fishing!

What a Catch.  Took Larry out during a snow storm and he slayed ‘em.  I’m usually ontime for pick up but this one was an unusual trip.  Pickup was at 9:30 and as I was driving up the canyon parleys required chains or 4×4.  I had to go grab some chains and then I was on my way.  Traffic was only going 30 mph on a 65 mph rode.  Larry was way understanding since it was a blizzard out. We got to our spot an we had a fish on our first cast and landed a fish within the first five minutes.  He caught a total of 6 fish within 3 hours.  Nice Work Larry!  Again it was unusual as we went home and the canyon to get back to Park City was shut down, we had to go around the backway.  It was a fun trip.  Very memorable and I’m glad Larry was still excited to go in the snow storm.  It paid off, it was only his first time fly fishing and he did so good!

Provo River – Biggest Fish Of The River

What a catch…I’ll post the details later…our guess 26 inches..what’s your guess?

FISH ON

Park City Fly Fishing

Fly Fishing is good year around thing to do in Park City.  Although the fishing stays consistently good throughout the year (fish are always eating), one thing does change…the types of flies to use.  Our other website trout fishing Utah, is a good place to check out if you will be in Park City Fly Fishing and want to know what flies to use.  One thing that has changed is that it’s midge season…small ones, sizes 20, 22 & 24 like the picture above.  Hopefully you’ll catch some big ones when you go out on your own or with us.
