I would have to say my favorite clients are the ones whos biggest expectation is to only ensure a relaxing fun time on the river.  Zillah was one of those clients.  No pressure of catching fish, just the pressure of going out, learning the ropes, having fun and relaxing on the river.  Zillah made sure to mention before hand that if she caught a fish fly fishing in Utah that would definitely be a bonus.

In order to appreciate Zillah’s catch, you have to learn the mindset she came with to fish with me.  Her and her colleagues were in town from the United Kingdom on a business trip.  Since they were staying in Deer Valley, most of them choose to ski while in town.  But while her colleagues were skiing Zillah choose to come out fishing with me and they all told her fishing would be a waste of time since there were no bugs during the winter (but that is why Zillah wanted to come, she hates bugs bitting her).

So about 1 hour into the fishing after Zillah was starting to figure out the whole fly fishing gig, I stepped out of the river to watch and bam, she set the hook and FISH ON!  Zillah landed the 13 inch brown trout after a little fight. She was so excited to show her pictures to her colleagues to give them an idea of what they missed out on while they thought skiing was the only thing to do in Park City this time of year.

The fishing on the Middle Provo River right now has been crazy good.  It is the spawn, so you have to be careful not to step on any redds (where the fish spawn).   But I have seen multiple clients catching 20+ fish a day on half day trips.  The fish above was measured 24″, it is my Dad, he was coming home from doing a mediation in Utah, and he took the time to stop by and do a quick hour of fishing on the way home…boy was he glad he did!   This time of year is my personal favorite time to get out fly fishing.  It’s georgeous, and not a ton of people are on the water like you see in the summer.  You can also see the fish in the water right now because the water is low and it is extremely fun to just watch them.

Last week I met with {Branded} online magazine for an interview about entrepreneurship.   As I was going through college I made a decision, that decision was “at all costs I will work for myself.”  It has been a quest of hardship and struggle and one of success and learning.  I prefer to focus on the later as I hope to find enormous success in the future.  Thanks (Branded) for the interview.  I wish your magazine enormous success as well!

This past week I had the opportunity to take out Mike, a client from Indiana.  Together we had a blast.  Within the first 15 minutes he had already landed a very nice 16 or 17 inch brown on a provo river egg patern.  Then within the four hour time period we had stopped counting and we guessed he caught over a dozen fish after a half day of fishing…all real nice fish.

I have been out on the water on full day guiding trips in Utah for the past three day. The fishing has been good, and I have seen the fish starting to breech, getting ready for the spawn.

I came home from guiding today and had an e-mail which said:

What time of year do you provide flyfishing services?

I really liked this question, and I’ll answer it for you reading this as well.  Most people think that the winter time is not a good time to fish.  On the contrary, it’s an excillent time to get out fly fishing.  The brown trout start to spawn in Novemeber and their are fewer crowds.  This means more and bigger fish!

So to answer the question, we guide year around,  the real question is:  “What time of year do you want to be guided?”  Note that the above picture was taken November 2009 during the spawn on the Provo River.  (fyi – we provide all the gear necessary:  warm gloves, fly fishing jackets, hats etc…)

He got to experience it all.  He showed off his nymphing skills for monster rainbows  as well as catch fish on size 20 midge dry patterns!  He’s a natural fly caster and had some perfectly placed casts that deceived some big boys while sight fishing with hoppers.  WOW!  Atta boy Josh!

Utah Fly Fishing Adventure!
