Winter fishing near Salt Lake
Last week I had out a very skilled angler who wanted to get out winter fishing near Salt Lake. Tracy was able to land this beautiful Cutbow on the middle section of The Provo River. I don’t get to see many Cutbows on the Provo River and it was the first one I had ever seen caught on The Middle section of the Provo. Nice catch Tracy!
The fly of the day, shown below, was a very productive pattern during the mid afternoon midge hatch. We trailed it about 24 inches behind a dry fly midge and having this pupa just barley breaking the surface seemed to do the trick.

The Bachelor Fly Fishing Park City Utah
ABC Photo | NATALIE CASS
Park City is a great place to learn to fly fish, even for the Bachelor, I’m not much for the show the Bachelor – a little to much Drama and craziness. But when I heard the event was taking place in Park City this week I knew it would be fun to watch. In case you are wondering what hotel they stayed in (since they never said on the show), it was the Waldorf Astoria in Park City, Utah. It’s one of if not the nicest hotels at the canyons. I’m pretty sure they were here in October since that was our first snow storm of the year, and that is when the fall colors on the trees looked like they did.
Here is a little recap from nj.com of what happend:
Fishing for trout, or Ben? Ben took the ladies on a group date in Park City that involved horseback riding and fly-fishing in a nearby stream. Not going to lie: it was pretty satisfying these prissy women put up their hair and step into the baggy fishing suits. Courtney, who’s told us she “blossoms” around Ben, tries to take Ben to a more private fishing area, but Lindzi spoils her one-on-one plans. As Courtney puts it, “Let’s be honest. It’s not really about catching the trout. It’s more about catching Ben.” Good point.
As we were watching this part of the show, where they went fly fishing, I was impressed with how they captured the beauty of Utah but I kept telling my wife how I would have been horrible at this point. I would have wanted the Bachelorette’s to actually be catching fish. Ben had a rough go at trying to teach that many people how to fish at once. To make it worse, they were wadding through the water together, fishing in the middle of themselves. It’s no wonder they weren’t catching anything. Even as a professional guide I don’t like to guide more then 2 beginners at a time. But I guess Ben didn’t have a “no fish, no pay” policy or in his situation “no fish, no stay”.
Zillah Conqures Fly Fishing In Utah
(Zillah’s first fly fishing catch)
I would have to say my favorite clients are the ones whos biggest expectation is to only ensure a relaxing fun time on the river. Zillah was one of those clients. No pressure of catching fish, just the pressure of going out, learning the ropes, having fun and relaxing on the river. Zillah made sure to mention before hand that if she caught a fish fly fishing in Utah that would definitely be a bonus.
In order to appreciate Zillah’s catch, you have to learn the mindset she came with to fish with me. Her and her colleagues were in town from the United Kingdom on a business trip. Since they were staying in Deer Valley, most of them choose to ski while in town. But while her colleagues were skiing Zillah choose to come out fishing with me and they all told her fishing would be a waste of time since there were no bugs during the winter (but that is why Zillah wanted to come, she hates bugs bitting her).
So about 1 hour into the fishing after Zillah was starting to figure out the whole fly fishing gig, I stepped out of the river to watch and bam, she set the hook and FISH ON! Zillah landed the 13 inch brown trout after a little fight. She was so excited to show her pictures to her colleagues to give them an idea of what they missed out on while they thought skiing was the only thing to do in Park City this time of year.
Fish On Zillah, we look forward to you fly fishing in Utah again!
Other things to do in Park City Utah besides skiing – Fly Fishing
(Ryan’s 2nd catch)
There are other things to do in Park City besides skiing and our group out yesterday found some luck on the river fly fishing. Park City this year doesn’t have much snow yet, so people are looking for alternatives to skiing and so we are seeing a lot of people wanting to come out and fly fish the provo river with us. There were a lot of people on the water yesterday since the weather is still warm. All four people in the group caught fish, so if you are looking for things to do in park city this winter besides skiing…come out with us and try fly fishing.
Where to stay in Park City?
Where to stay in park city? We can answer that. Check out the Stein Erickson Lodge located near Deer Valley Ski Resort. This is a 5 star hotel that provides many accommodations for your stay while in Park City, Utah.
Why would we recommend this hotel? As a fly fishing guide service here in Park City we encounter many clients, and one important element to their vacation, business trip, etc. is the comfort of staying in a quality hotel. They enjoy a facility that provides excellent service and hospitality, and the Stein Erickson Lodge is just that. We love picking up our clients at the Stein Erickson and they always have good reviews about “Steins”.
Today, our client Charles and his two boys came out fly fishing with us. We picked them up at the Stein Erickson Lodge, they’ve been staying there for the past couple days and they told me they have loved it. We picked them up at 7 a.m. for a great day out on the Provo River fly fishing. The boys out fished their father and the group of three caught a total of 22 fish in four hours. It was amazing! Charles did give the boys a head start on the fly fishing as he was filming and taking pictures.
Remember to book your stay at the Stein Erickson Lodge while staying here in Park City. And don’t forget to book your fly fishing adventure with Utah Pro Fly Fishing. To make a reservation call Justin at 801.376.0626 or visit our contact page and drop us a quick line.
The Provo River Osprey
I always enjoy seeing Osprey cruise the Provo river for two reasons: 1) They are a beautiful birds and 2) I know they know the good fishing spots.
Last year I was guiding The Provo River and I saw an Osprey circle us time and time again from about 150 feet above the air.
I noted to my client that it was a fish predator, and we might we something spectacular. As we watched the Osprey circle for about five minutes, it made a sudden dash, head down, strait for the cool water. Right before it got to the water it lifted it’s head up and laid it’s wing’s across the rippling water, nevertheless making a huge splash. As it struggled for over 30 sec to pull out of the water, it had the same helplessness of a hatching mayfly trying to take it’s first flight. The Osprey then exited the water, still struggling, but slowly gaining it’s strength, as it flew away with a majestic fish that just like us, seeks this pride over and over again. This bird is one who explores, seeks, and finds success and has a name that now means more…”The Osprey”

How Is The Water Level On The Lower Provo River
The graph above shows an eight day cycle of the Lower Provo River. I am excited to say the water levels are finally dropping on the lower provo river. They have been very high the past month and now we are starting to see a drop. Today the CFS level dropped 200, which as you can see from the graph is quite a bit, considering the middle provo river is running at a total of 547 CFS today.
My guess is that they will now start filling up Deer Creek Reservoir in anticipation for the hot dry summer months, but they have yet started flowing the water out of jordanelle, so the middle provo river is about to see it’s spring flush soon.
It’s important to fish with a Utah Fly Fishing Guide so that you have the opportunity to do the best fishing while out on the fly fishing rivers
Look forward to fly fishing with you soon!
