Catching A Sculpin In The Logan River
I have seen some pretty crazy things while fly fishing rivers, from a dead moose, to multiple snakes going across the river, to weird looking fish. But last year, at the end of April 2009, I was stunned by what I saw while catching a fish while fly fishing on the Logan River. It was tough fishing, the spring run-off caused the river to be pretty fast and swift, after 30 min I hadn’t even had a hit. But there it was, I got a hit and “FISH ON!” It wasn’t the biggest fish I ever pulled in, but when I noticed that their was something crazy in it’s mouth I really wanted to get it in. I was excited to land the fish and be able to get the picture that you see above.
The main thought I had was “what a greedy fish!” I could hardly believe that it still had it’s last meal in it’s mouth and it was still going after my olive colored, size #16, Nick’s Flashlight Midge from Rainy’s Flies (I’ve noticed these midge patterns work REALLY well!)
I’ll end my story letting you know that when you are fly fishing rivers you never know what your going to catch, what you pull in might be more intriguing then just catching your biggest fish!
